When it comes to a fire emergency, every second counts. Not using your P50 fire extinguisher when you should – and conversely, using it when you shouldn’t… can cause more harm than good. Here’s your essential decision framework.
Use PASS – Pull the pin, Aim at base of fire (not top), Squeeze trigger, Sweep in a side to side motion. For more information on P50 Fire Extinguishers, visit www.lsfiresolutions.co.uk/fire-extinguishers/ecoextinguishers/p50/
When to Act
If the fire is under control and your route of escape is clear or emergency services have already asked you to use the P50. The fire should still be fledgling – i.e., flames are not yet as high as your knee. If smoke is filling the room or heat is severe, get out of there!
When NOT to Use
If oil catches fire in small spaces do not use P50 extinguishers – this powder can spread burning oil. Use it only when you must and try to avoid using sensitive electronics, as the buildup will damage them. If you are uncertain about the type of fire or if it is not safe; get out and call for help.
The Golden Rule
When in doubt, get out. No property is worth dying for! P50 extinguishers are designed for the easy fight of small, containable fires, when you are in a position (and can make a sensible judgement about your safety) to do so.
